Previous waves of automation predominantly affected negatively low-wage occupations and caused a surge in suicides, accounting for 51% of the overall increase in suicide deaths in this group.
The GenAI automation wave is unique in that blue-collar workers may be the least harmed. The occupations most exposed to GenAI are high-wage, professional roles with higher education.
According to a study, white-collar workers might be now at even in greater risk what it comes to suicides, the deaths of despair.

While GenAI will initially lead to job losses in many sectors and occupations, other sectors will grow as the economy adjusts. As the GenAI cycle unfolds over a decade or more, we must invest in support programs to ensure people have the necessary help, skills, and training to navigate the transition period.
The good news is, as of 1/2024, 36% of the global population still does not have access to the internet, which leaves almost 3 billion people immune to the first-hand effects of GenAi.
The question is: what happens to the rest – the estimated 6 percent of the remaining 5 billion who will be jobless in the (near?) future?
What will happen if governments lose the input of 300 million taxpayers and the profits shift more and more to the private sector?
Who will take care of the costs of mental health and unemployment? That is the question to ask.
